EASYJET IN NORDIC EXPANSION

36-09

EASYJET THIS MONTH launches daily flights between Gatwick and Copenhagen - a route it snapped up after the collapse late last year of Icelandic-owned Scandinavian low-fare carrier Sterling Airlines.

David Osborne, easyJet's regional general manager for the UK, said frequencies could be stepped up with the start of the airline's summer schedules in March. "The Nordic countries offer considerable growth opportunities for easyJet," he said.

In an attempt to stem losses on both sides, Sterling was merged with Maersk Air in 2005, but even then it proved too weak to survive 2008's fuel price spike, and a restructuring plan was then stymied by the global banking crisis.

EasyJet already operates three times a day between Stansted and Copenhagen, and launched a new service between Gatwick and Helsinki in November.
