Huge Losses for US Carriers

THE US'S MAJOR legacy carriers have once again recorded huge losses, with United Airlines faring worst with a net deficit of US$2.73 billion for the second quarter.

AMR Corporation, American Airlines' parent company, reported a Q2/08 net loss of US$1.4 billion, Continental managed to slip only US$13 million into the red, while Delta Airlines made a loss of US$1 billion.

Minneapolis-based Northwest Airlines reported a Q2/08 net loss of US$377 million, while US Airways had a net loss of US$567 million.

"Special charges" of US$2.6 billion contributed to United's nightmare result, but even without them the airline would still have recorded a net loss of US$151 million.
